Monopoly:Travel Edition is a curious travel-format promotional variant, holding the honor of being the first entry in an iconic collection of games in this format. This edition, in its Spanish version, was released by El País, a Spanish daily newspaper, in collaboration with Hasbro. Originally manufactured by SIU & Key Ltd. in Belgium, it was distributed through newsstands in 2012 as part of a major summer campaign, this piece standing out for adapting the classic game into a compact 3D format, ideal for travel.
Packaging format: A rectangular, compact 3D cardboard box that adapts the brand's iconic green-and-red visual identity for its travel format. The back of the box itself includes the full instruction manual printed on its surface.
Distribution: SIU & Key Ltd. (Belgium) / Promotional newsstand edition distributed on consecutive Sundays in Spain alongside the El País newspaper, through a daily coupon requiring an additional payment of €9.95.
Estimated print run: Unknown but very high. As a product tied to a massive summer campaign by Spain's best-selling newspaper of the time (El País), units distributed nationwide through newsstands are estimated in the tens of thousands. However, the current survival rate in complete, optimal condition is drastically low, due to the typical wear of its 3D micro-components in vacation settings.
Condition: Opened, unused. Shows minor conservation wear typical of its age. The cardboard box's outer structure shows slight wear from storage, localized on one of its front corners. The insert or interior plastic tray, in red, is complete, though it shows slight wear in the lower-left compartment. All interior game components (micro cards, banknote stacks, dice, and 3D tokens) remain in pristine, unused condition.
Peculiarities of this edition and component quality: Although this type of press promotion was typically manufactured in cheap flat cardboard formats, this release stands out for offering a far superior 3D physical experience for its time.
Travel packaging dimensions: The packaging format has an estimated size of 20 cm wide, 20 cm tall, and 4.5 cm deep. This medium size is ideal for balancing portability in travel luggage without sacrificing the rigidity of the packaging or the size of its internal components.
Instruction manual integrated into the box: Breaking away from traditional loose paper booklets (which tend to get lost or torn easily), this edition boasts an excellent design solution: the complete instruction manual is printed and integrated directly onto the surface of the back of the box itself. As can be seen in the photograph of the collection unit, this clever layout solution is not exclusive to this piece, but rather a shared structural identity feature across the entire collection's releases.
Expanded 3D engineering (pawns and micro houses): In contrast to the promotional trend of including flat, die-cut cardboard tokens at a reduced scale, this variant stands out for including physical 3D components at a reduced scale: green houses, red hotels, white and black dot dice, and a set of 8 classic pawn-style tokens in bold colors (including yellow, red, green, blue, purple, and black). As duly recorded in the official breakdown of the box manual's Contents section, the edition ships from the factory with these 8 units, allowing games to include more players than is typical for this type of compact travel edition.
Faithfulness to the Madrid street map: Despite the drastic reduction in board scale, the board was not simplified with a generic design. It retains all 40 traditional spaces from the standard Spanish edition, preserving its original properties (from Ronda de Valencia or Plaza Lavapiés to the coveted Paseo del Prado and La Castellana), as well as its four historic railway stations (Mediodía, Delicias, Norte, and Goya).
Absolute color-scheme aesthetic (fully lined base): A visually outstanding design touch is the full commitment to the brand's color identity within the packaging. The cardboard box's base is completely lined in red, both inside and out, and in perfect harmony, houses inside a thermoformed plastic tray or cradle in that same shade of red. This "all-red" design completely conceals the raw cardboard and adds a premium finish to display the tabletop. The plastic tray is configured with no individual dividers, allowing all the individual banknote stacks to be stored in a single compact stack, optimizing space alongside the micro cards to prevent creasing during transport.
Four-piece board: Manufactured from high-density satin rigid cardboard with a symmetrical double-fold system, allowing it to be reduced to exactly a quarter of its size to fit flat inside the plastic cradle.
