Monopoly: Ghostbusters Edition (Los Cazafantasmas) is a themed variant based on the well-known 80s film franchise. Released in 2020, this edition preserves the classic real-estate management system of the traditional game while adapting its entire visual style to the paranormal atmosphere of the film. Its presentation stands out for including a physical card holder emulating the ghost trap with integrated sound, completing an edition that reached Spanish store shelves fully edited in Spanish.
Packaging format: Standard square box with a die-cut open window (Interactive "Try-Me" Design).
Distribution: Published under the official license of Hasbro Gaming. The initial rollout was planned to commemorate the franchise's legacy, generating a gradual logistical trickle of localized copies internationally.
Condition: Opened, interior components factory-sealed.
Peculiarity of this edition: An absolute graphic redesign adapting the franchise's traditional aesthetic to the iconography of the classic 1984 film. The board replaces traditional properties with contracts set in the film's most iconic locations, additionally incorporating a physical card holder shaped like the ghost trap that reproduces music from the film while playing.
Tokens: This edition includes 6 metal commemorative tokens with an excellent finish, representing key elements pulled directly from the films: the P.K.E. Meter, the ectoplasm goggles, the proton pack, a ghost trap, the iconic round-frame glasses, and Dana Barrett's cello.
Properties and Buildings: The traditional properties are transformed into "contracts" for services at the films' most iconic locations and settings, including the New York Public Library, Dana Barrett's apartment on Central Park West, or the Firehouse itself serving as headquarters. To maintain thematic coherence, the classic houses and hotels are replaced by ghost traps (the grey pieces) and containment units (the red pieces).
Stations: The four traditional train stations are transformed into spaces dedicated to the iconic ECTO-1 vehicle. Instead of functioning as independent transport properties, they introduce a special rule allowing the active player to pay 50M to the bank to travel quickly from their current position to any of the other four spaces. — a classic "goose-to-goose" jump, just like in the old Game of the Goose.
Absence of Service Companies: The classic utility companies disappear, giving way to Supernatural Entities, with a total of 4 spaces distributed across the board dedicated to Slimer, the library ghost, Vinz Clortho, and the Marshmallow Man. Landing on any of them triggers a mandatory cooperative mechanic where the player whose turn it is must combat the paranormal threat by rolling the dice together with the bank. If the outcome is favorable, both parties receive a reward from the bank; otherwise, they must pay a financial penalty. Notably, to make room for these encounters and streamline the board, the traditional Income Tax and Luxury Tax spaces have completely disappeared.
Game Cards: The traditional Chance and Community Chest decks disappear completely, merging into a single type of card called the Omniscient Spectral Deck. This single deck centralizes all paranormal events, rewards, and penalties throughout the game.
As this edition is preserved with its interior components in their native state, Factory Sealed (sealed from the factory in their original plastic bags), archival images and external documentation screenshots are used to show the back of the cards and the game's layout in detail, without altering my edition's preservation.
Since I couldn't find any image of this board in Spanish online (that convinced me or matched my way of photographing things), I decided to unseal my own copy specifically to photograph it. So this photo, and the authorship behind it, is 100% mine, just like nearly all the photos on my page.
